Boiled Peanuts

You find these peanuts at crafts fairs, Aloha festivals, hula performances, farmers markets, sports events and other outdoor and indoor events all over Hawaii and at Hawaiian events on the mainland.

Boiled Peanuts

There are all sorts of variations in the form of seasonings, from garlic, hot peppers and ginger to seaweed, sesame seeds and honey. If you happen to come across raw peanuts in the shell, here’s how to prepare them.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound raw peanuts in the shell
  • 3 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 star anise

Directions

  1. Put the peanuts, salt and anise in a saucepan, cover with plenty of water, bring to a boil over high heat, reduce the heat and simmer for 2 hours.

  2. Remove from the heat and let cool in the cooking water.

  3. Drain thoroughly and enjoy, with or without additional seasonings.
